NASA Perseverance: Listen to the first sounds recorded from the surface of Mars

1 min read

The video begins after the spacecraft withstood the entry of 1,300 ° C into the Martian atmosphere. Sky-facing cameras on the rear hull show the deployment of the 150lb parachute in less than a second, which slowed the spacecraft as it raced toward the surface. Then, cameras facing the ground from the bottom of the rover show the heat shield separating and falling to the ground, about 9.5 kilometers above the surface.

The red landscape is shown in exquisite detail, rolling hills and ledges along with craters and small valleys, focusing more closely as the rover continues to descend. As the rover nears the ground, video passes to the cameras facing the rover’s sky and the cameras facing the ground of the descent phase as the descent phase drops the rover from its cords and slows the descent using of its reverse thrusters. Finally, after the rover touches the surface, we see the descent vehicle break loose and fly off-screen, only to crash somewhere nearby. Perseverance has landed.
